With the current pandemic, the state of the music and touring industry has dramatically changed. Where were you when everything was brought to a halt?
We were just finishing our first tour in the US, when we flew from Seattle to New York for the New Colossus Festival mid-March. Over the course of the weekend we saw NYC for the first time and also watched it all shut down.
How has that affected your plans for the coming months? Did you have a tour planned, upcoming album release?
We had big plans for touring our first full length album, and while we were lucky to have gotten to tour parts of Canada and the US, the following week we were set for our first European dates in Estonia at Tallinn Music Week in April, and invited on a Western Canadian tour with Dave Monks (Tokyo Police Club) for May. A busy spring was ahead, and a few festivals had already popped up for the summer, including Yellowknife’s Folk on The Rocks. Overall, mostly we just feel grateful that we felt like we had created some opportunity, even if it hasn’t panned out quite yet to see these cool new places.
What have you been doing to fill/make the most of your new-found free time at home?
Reading more than I can remember reading for a long time. And writing! And sleeping. There’s been, at some moments, a chance to be relaxing and getting in better schedules in our brains, and that seems really valuable. Time can really seem like a social concept.
What was the first thing you did/place you went to now the country is starting to slowly re-open?
There’s a special bump on highway 2 about 20 minutes south of Leduc that if you drive over at the right speed on the way to Calgary, u feel weightless for a second.
Favourite Starlite Room Moment?
Probably the first time a stranger knew all my made-up words to a made-up song and just wanted to sing them together.
Do you have a message for everyone at home reading this?
Live music and cool events will go away forever if you don’t help us fight to keep venues alive. #SupportCanadianVenues
