Cups N Cakes began as a bi-weekly internet radio show playing only Canadian independent acts. The program started as a way for hosts Jeff MacCallum and Carey Newton to maintain their friendship while sharing laughs along with their favourite music. In May of 2017, Jeff began elevating Cups N Cakes to new heights by morphing it into a multi-media music source with the launch of this website and re-branding to The Cups N Cakes Network. With the new look came the addition of weekly written reviews, an interview based podcast, the Vinyl Unveil YouTube show and, of course, the original internet radio program.
The Cups N Cakes internet radio show has been in existence for over six years and has become one of the best sources for new Canadian music. Each show was comprised of a half hour of Jeff and Carey’s tomfoolerous banter and an hour of new music. The duo’s chemistry was evident as they would unapologetically chat about a vast array of topics and try to poke fun at society in general. In October of 2018, Carey and Jeff stepped down and handed the show over to Kent Phillips and Ella Coyes.
Over the course of the radio show’s existence, Jeff found that their interviews typically had great content getting cut due to time constraints. This led to the interview podcast called “Inside The Artists Studio.” During the podcast’s short history they have managed to interview some amazing Canadian acts such as: Napalmpom, Cartel Madras, Shotgun Jimmie, Faith Healer, Mobina Galore, Mauno, Freak Heat Waves, The Wet Secrets, The Garrys, and more. The interviews inform listeners on the happenings with each act but then attempt to get the musicians to let their guards down with a goofy rapid-fire questionnaire. Jeff took over this segment from Marvin Greensborough following his disappearance in October, 2017. New team member Seam Newton took over 50% of the interviews in September, 2018 and later took over the entire show after Inside The Artists Studio relaunched following its Covid-19 hiatus.
In addition to those audio components, the website boasts music reviews, premieres, a news section, an online store, a weekly highlighted music video and the Cups N Cakes Vinyl Unveil.
Cups N Cakes is a necessary experience for music fans still interested in discovering the latest and greatest acts. Near the end of 2018, the rapid growth of the Cups N Cakes Network forced MacCallum to seek help by assembling a team. That team is the backbone of the network, Cups N Cakes could not exist without them.
