With the current pandemic, the state of the music and touring industry has dramatically changed. Where were you when everything was brought to a halt?
In Oldham, Greater Manchester. Living with my parents.
How has that affected your plans for the coming year? Did you have a tour planned, upcoming album release?
I decided to turn my passion for making music into a legitimate music career at the start of the pandemic and other than not being able to play live I have being able to realize most of my plans and achieve a lot. This year has been a huge step forward as I recorded my original songs in the studio with my producer Tngey and I have since released my debut single 'Diamond In The Rough' which was really well received by my audience and over 15 publications such as Earmilk who praised it as an 'intoxicating tune' and Variance Magazine who said 'Scott Magnus acts a beacon of light for people with disabilities in powerful new single'.
This is the first in a series of singles being released from my six-track EP Comeback Stronger. My next single 'The Phoenix' is out on Friday 16th July.
What have you been doing to fill/make the most of your new-found free time at home? How are you supporting your mental health through all of this?
I have been going into work everyday since September because I got a job as a key worker. But prior to that I was at home in Lockdown and I manage to be quite productive with my time and put my focus into my work and on getting fit and strong which was great for my well being. I honed my skills as a songwriter, singer, guitarist and producer performing covers and writing copious amounts of songs. I had a laugh with my audience creating and performing sketch comedy content as a wide variety of characters which has helped me build my audience online.
As things are reopening & restrictions are lifting have you booked any new gigs? Tours? Etc? If your region is still under restriction, how are dealing with the Covid third wave?
I have booked a gig at The Good Plot in Notting Hill, London. My focus right not is on my up coming releases and the rest of the songs I need to record for my debut EP Come Back Stronger but soon I will put my focus into booking gigs. I already have made some strong connections with artists who I admire who make similar music to me and are local such as PDtheSaint and Hidingthehurt. I would love to support these artist and I have even had ideas to put an alternative music gig in Manchester to make it happen, so watch this space.
Last year I was able to attend the Whiskey Jar open mics and I was really impressed by the talent on show there so I hope to perform there later this year.
Favourite Starlite Room moment?
I enjoyed your interview with Coral Palms. It was an enjoyable listen. I liked Dylans honest and down to earth interviewing style. It was cool to find out about the makings of the their debut single 'Echoes' from a fresh and exciting band and how the song began 4 years ago when the band first rehearsed and sensing how special it is to them. I love seeing artists who are really passionate about their music and what they do!
Do you have a message for everyone at home reading this?
As someone who lives with significant learning difficulties who once thought my prospects looked quite bleak I can tell you their is always hope even in a seemingly hopeless place if you keep the faith, follow your intuition, work hard and be persistent you can achieve great things and overcome your obstacles. The progress I have made from the end of 2019 where I was in a real rut to put it lightly to where I am now is testament to that.
