With the current pandemic, the state of the music and touring industry has dramatically changed. Where were you when everything was brought to a halt?
I had been playing locally prior to the pandemic, however that changed quickly once the pandemic started.
How has that affected your plans for the coming year? Did you have a tour planned, upcoming album release?
The pandemic created an opportunity for me to slow down and focus on writing. For the past several months my husband and I have been working on material for an upcoming album.
What have you been doing to fill/make the most of your new-found free time at home? How are you supporting your mental health through all of this?
Last January I began writing again. music is very therapeutic for me. It is so easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life so, having the time to reflect and write definitely helps with my own anxiety.
As things are reopening & restrictions are lifting have you booked any new gigs? Tours? Etc? If your region is still under restriction, how are dealing with the Covid third wave?
At the moment I am working on writing and completing a new album. I also started the Somebody Pray project with Dr Benita Bunjun with the goal of helping Indigenous youth.
Favourite Starlite Room Moment?
I loved the interview with Liona Boyd. I have been in awe of her since I was a little girl. She is an incredibly talented musician and artist.
Do you have a message for everyone at home reading this?
My new single is part of the The “Somebody Pray Project” which began to unfold in January 2021 when I envisioned the ways that we could support the health and well-being of Indigenous youth. As an artist/singer and educator, the lyrics to “Somebody Pray” came pouring out as I reflected on those in her life who have been impacted by the violent history of the Indian Residential School system in Canada. The purpose of the “Somebody Pray Project” is to support the creation of a youth care and advocacy centre in the community of the Paq'tnkek Mi’kmaw Nation. The GoFundMe Voices for the Silenced of Residential Schools is to assist with the completion of the album that features “Somebody Pray”. It is the hope that this album will bring further awareness of social justice issues, and ultimately contribute toward the youth centre.
