With the current pandemic, the state of the music and touring industry has dramatically changed. Where were you when everything was brought to a halt?
When everything was brought to a halt I was working a day job as a content editor and writing music at night. I was performing at a lot of open mics and I was just started to play live again for the first time after a long hiatus. It was a bit of a bummer that the pandemic started a bit after when I decided to pursue a music career but I tried to see the silver lining in it. I was still able to write and record which I'm super grateful for.
How has that affected your plans for the coming year? Did you have a tour planned, upcoming album release?
Because I started my music career around the same time the pandemic happened I didn't have much of any plans other than writing, recording and releasing music. But it did affect my ability to potentially tour and even film music videos. I've tried to just go with the flow and do what I can with what I have available. Definitely makes the release and promotion of music a little different without the touring aspect, but I'm still excited to be making music regardless.
What have you been doing to fill/make the most of your new-found free time at home? How are you supporting your mental health through all of this?
I've been spending a lot of time writing music, improving my instrument and production skills. My goal is to be able to self-produce my music so I've been practicing and learning a lot. I've also been doing lots of other things like keeping active, reading, spending time with close family and even making YouTube videos about the songwriting process. I've been trying to use mindfulness and meditation as well as a lot of long walks to help with my mental (and physical) wellbeing. It's been difficult in a lot of ways but also nice to have a lot more time for more of my interests and creative goals.
How are dealing with the Covid third wave?
Lots of empathy and kindness for myself (and others). This is a rough time. And weird time. So we have to accept and forgive that things won't necessarily be easy, and that's ok.
Favourite Starlite Room Moment?
I am loving the lego creations in It’s 5 O’Clock Here. Perfect combination of childhood memories and adult life. Can't ask for a better combo.
Do you have a message for everyone at home reading this?
Hi Mom and friends. You're all really badass and inspiring. Thanks for supporting me even when you probably thought I was a bit crazy for pursuing music in a pandemic.
