With the current pandemic, the state of the music and touring industry has dramatically changed. Where were you when everything was brought to a halt?
Blossoming as a florist in West Edmonton - ended up being laid off mid march because many flower related events were cancelled!
How has that affected your plans for the coming months? Did you have a tour planned, upcoming album release?
When everything got cut off, it felt like being dunked in a pool of ice water. There was one morning where I couldn't sleep so I decided to bake a chocolate zucchini cake. The radio report was going through all of the statistics and I very vividly recall thinking that there might not be a place for visual art for a long time after this? It didn't help that I lost a family member right at the end of March, everything felt very grey. But once the news started to settle and I got a little bit of vitamin D in my system I started see colour again! Good thing I decided to get the ball rolling because now I have 6 art projects coming up in the next 4 months! Hopefully we can all behave so that Covid doesn't get super horrible for everyone again.
What have you been doing to fill/make the most of your new-found free time at home?
First emerged from my den in late May to participate in an Emerging artist internship at the Nina Haggerty Centre for the Arts. Collaborated with one really great artist; Brittany Leitheiser and that was a lot of fun. We wrote an EPIC 56 page children's poem/book about an Alien Cat together. Other than that I have been going for a lot of walks!
What was the first thing you did/place you went to now the country is starting to slowly re-open?
The first place that I went to was actually River City Revival in mid August when my partner Waldo Poblano last minute played the patio with Sake Hot Tubs. Also, I have gone back country hiking a few times.
Favourite Starlite Room Moment?
The last show I went to in the "old world" was Andy Shauf w/ Molly Sarlé at the Starlite room, so I'll go with that one because my cousin invited me! But there have been too many favourite moments over the years to count on all of my fingers and toes.
Do you have a message for everyone at home reading this?
Be kind, foster empathy, stay safe, wash your hands, virtually hug friends and family (and maybe some strangers), remember that the world needs art and music - we will get through this!
