With the current pandemic, the state of the music and touring industry has dramatically changed. Where were you when everything was brought to a halt?

I was not actively participating in the music industry as an artist at the time the pandemic started! I was a mere fan, slowly getting back into writing music after taking a break to learn to play roller derby. I was training about 9 hours a week, plus commuting time, and my travel team was gearing up to play our first tournament of the season which was supposed to be the following weekend. Then the halt came.

How has that affected your plans for the coming year? Did you have a tour planned, upcoming album release?

I realized that I had an opportunity to take the time I would have in lockdown to learn how to produce. I know how to play guitar, trumpet, and mandolin. And I spent my formative years watching my family's Irish rock band play around the GTA, and singing in choirs. I just said f*$& it, I can play instruments, sing, and write - logically I should be able to put the pieces together and learn how to finish my songs.

What have you been doing to fill/make the most of your new-found free time at home? How are you supporting your mental health through all of this?

Gloom Patrol was my pandemic mental health life raft. I have OCD and anxiety and I need to be constantly doing things, otherwise my brain can spiral into bad places. I am actually very grateful for my time alone during the pandemic. I don't think I would have been able to make this without this time isolated at home. I would have still made music, but I don't think I would have had the time to learn to do it all myself in the past year.

As things are reopening & restrictions are lifting have you booked any new gigs? Tours? Etc? If your region is still under restriction, how are dealing with the Covid third wave?

I have not booked any new gigs yet, I'm located in Toronto and things are slowly opening up here, with in- person concerts being planned for the fall. I've very eager to play shows though! I'm a very physically minded person, and I love performing and connecting with people.

Favourite Starlite Room Moment?

Eric Alper introduced me to this series, which I love. I also loved learning more about the Starlite Room's history in "If These Walls Could Talk"!

Do you have a message for everyone at home reading this?

You can do anything you put your mind to. Whether that's learning a new sport, a new instrument, or whatever you want. Just go for it!
