With the current pandemic, the state of the music and touring industry has dramatically changed. Where were you when everything was brought to a halt?

San Francisco, CA while on tour with Colin James. We played our last show in Oakland and then flew home the next day.

How has that affected your plans for the coming year? Did you have a tour planned, upcoming album release?

Like all musicians I know, I’ve had so many tours/festivals/shows postponed or cancelled due to COVID restrictions. It’s a total drag, but, hopefully there is some light at the end of this deep, dark tunnel.

What have you been doing to fill/make the most of your new-found free time at home? How are you supporting your mental health through all of this?

I’ve spent most of my time in the studio - it has been my total salvation throughout all of this. Recording my own stuff, writing with others online, engineering recordings and mixing tracks for different artists. While I’m missing performing live really badly, it’s been really satisfying to develop these other skills that will help me the rest of the way. When I’m not working, I’m spending as much time outside as possible - big walks and hikes and going for drives with music cranked up.

How are dealing with the Covid third wave?

About as well as possible. It’s hard not to be able to hang out with people you love and enjoy the closeness we’re all accustomed to. I’ve been doing a lot of reading and learning to up my cooking game. I’m trying to take the time to complete the never ending list of little tasks that I’ve been neglecting for years. I find if I can at least feel productive, it keeps me from getting too down. Wine also helps.

Favourite Starlite Room Moment?

2018, I was in Edmonton with a night off and I happened to hear that Big Wreck (a favourite of mine) was playing The Starlite. Some friends and I went down and rocked out like it was 1997! Everybody was singing along and Thornley was on fire!

I so rarely get to actually watch other people’s gigs, it’s a rare treat.

Do you have a message for everyone at home reading this?

Hold Fast. We’re almost out of this shit. And, as soon as we are, I’m going to come to where you are and I’m going to rock the f*** out and we are going to party. I promise.
