With the current pandemic, the state of the music and touring industry has dramatically changed. Where were you when everything was brought to a halt?
We had formed the band in the summer of 2019 so the pandemic hit right as we were starting to get things really going in terms of establishing ourselves in the music scene in Montreal. We managed to get a good year of playing live shows recording a few singles and an EP and connecting to some folks in the music scene. Everything of course came to halt a short year later so we took that downtime to record our first album and hoping we will be able to showcase it live some time soon.
How has that affected your plans for the coming year? Did you have a tour planned, upcoming album release?
We have a full length album waiting to be released. We had hoped to be able to tour a bit in Canada and fully showcase the album. But we are adapting to where the world is now, completely virtual. So we will see have to see how that translates.
What have you been doing to fill/make the most of your new-found free time at home? How are you supporting your mental health through all of this?
I’ve had more time through the pandemic to focus on the production of the album. I definitely felt the pressure as an artist not to ‘waste’ my free time at home and I had a couple of months go by where I couldn’t do much of anything but play video games, watch movies and just hangout. Though it made me feel a bit guilty and the pressure finally got to me and pushed me to complete the production of the album. I have a home studio setup where I recorded everything on the album besides for the drums and some of the tracks my guitarist and bassist sent to me so I was able to do a lot on my own. I did end up writing a couple of songs that went into the album last minute as well so it wasn’t time ‘all’ lost.
In terms of mental health support in this super scary and confusing time I’d have to say I have a great support system amongst my friends and family and I’ve been blessed enough to have a good therapist that I’ve been checking in with. It’s so important to stay connected to our loved ones and our support system even if it’s virtual for the time being.
How are dealing with the Covid third wave?
It’s a rough time where it seems like the pandemic is endless and when things start to ease up a bit we are told it’s far from over. The regulations where I live are pretty tight and controlled which is great in keeping the little control we have over what’s going on. I would say the hardest part would be the curfew that was set in place, it has everyone wound up pretty tight and stressed out. I would say I’m dealing pretty well with it. It’s all a one day at a time thing and I’m lucky to have great family and friends and an outlet for my emotions through music.
Do you have a message for everyone at home reading this?
My message for everyone reading this would be to hold tight and take it one day at a time, it’s been a rough year for everyone and you’re not alone. Continue to do what you love in any way you can and be kind and patient with the ones around you and with yourself. And of course to continue to support the independent artists that are doing everything they can to keep their art going in this crazy time.
