With the current pandemic, the state of the music and touring industry has dramatically changed. Where were you when everything was brought to a halt?
I was actually in the process of finishing the three songs I've released so far, as well as music that's coming soon. So, in a way, when everything stopped it gave me the chance to immerse myself in the recording process. I work alone in a home studio, as well as through remote collaboration with a co-producer/mixer, so strangely enough my music was positively impacted because I was able to focus so intently on it.
How has that affected your plans for the coming year? Did you have a tour planned, upcoming album release?
The main plan that it affected for me was the "Borderlines" music video. I initially had a different concept for it, but because of the pandemic, I had to start again from scratch. I remember I couldn't think of anything for a while, but suddenly a new idea came to me in the middle of the night, and then I couldn't sleep afterwards.
The music video was directed, produced, and edited entirely by myself in quarantine. I suddenly just saw what it needed to be – I saw two clones in sparse, white space; one like a blank canvas and the other slightly insane, painting their face and throwing paint. It symbolizes this idea of a split personality – one side of me wanted to conform, and the other wanted to tap into this wild creativity. I asked a close friend if she would help bring my vision to life, and then it was a whirlwind of setting up a DIY studio space in my garage and filming. It was an ambitious project because the paint-throwing had to be done in one take.
In the end, though, I'm glad that I had all of those constraints because it makes sense for the song's meaning – the limitations of making the video symbolized being trapped inside of my own head, which is exactly what I wrote "Borderlines" about.
What have you been doing to fill/make the most of your new-found free time at home? How are you supporting your mental health through all of this?
I've been releasing music while also attending college full-time online. To be entirely transparent, I haven't had any free time or even time to breathe. All of my "free" time has been filled with learning as much as I can about the music industry, creating promotional assets, planning and strategizing, and much more.
As far as mental health goes, I've been spending a lot more time outside taking walks and trying to appreciate the world around me. I live in New Hampshire, USA surrounded by nature, and I've never truly appreciated how beautiful it is until now.
How are dealing with the Covid third wave?
I honestly never put my guard down. I've mostly stayed home, so nothing has changed just because there's a third wave. I won't be relaxing at all until I'm fully vaccinated.
Favourite Starlite Room Moment?
I hope that everyone is staying safe and finding refuge in music. If you have a chance to listen, I hope that my music is a positive force to help you see the world through a lens of greater depth and express yourself without limits.
Do you have a message for everyone at home reading this?
