With the current pandemic, the state of the music and touring industry has dramatically changed. Where were you when everything was brought to a halt?
It was definitely a shock to have things shut down like that once pandemic status was announced. The band was here in Edmonton and we had just started tracking Moon Sugar and our next single (to be released.....soon) at Red Bear Records here in the city. We had Bass and Drums in the can and just as Melvin and Karina we're going to polish off Guitars and Keys; LOCKDOWN. No Practice, No Studio. No Summer Single.
How has that affected your plans for the coming year? Did you have a tour planned, upcoming album release?
We were unfortunately fortunate to not have any tours booked at this time, but it definitely messed with our momentum. The band was coming off two successful local shows and our fans wanted more. The plan was to leak a few singles out during the year and have a record ready for release of the early new year. Moon Sugar was actually, originally set to be released for May Long Weekend of 2020 not April 1st of 2021. Covid-19 had it's own plans.
What have you been doing to fill/make the most of your new-found free time at home? How are you supporting your mental health through all of this?
Melvin:It hasn’t been hard keeping busy during the pandemic. We had a couple commissions to work on, were working full-time and have our families to balance and ground us too. Keeping self-motivated to practice consistently, though, without any gigs or rehearsals in sight hasn’t always been easy. We try to be kind to ourselves when in a slump and focus on what we can do. That usually helps get us back in the groove.
How are dealing with the Covid third wave?
Karina:The third wave is hard to deal with, honestly. We’ve had so many restrictions removed and reimposed. I think we fit in 2 rehearsals before having to shut down again. However, it feels pretty selfish to think of it that way considering the very real dangers of the pandemic. The perspective to realize what our front line workers and neighbours are going through will help us power through the home stretch...if we all do our part, hopefully we are dancing again in no time.
Favourite Starlite Room Moment?
Scotty: We have all enjoyed so many memorable moments in this historic venue and as a band we can't wait for the opportunity to grace that beautiful stage in a not so distant future. Favourite Starlite Room Moments for me personally would have to be shooting off Confetti Cannons at Midnight for a sold out Get Up Get Down Get Funked Vol 3 or opening for Teenage Bottle Rocket with AGP at the 9 o clock slot on a Thursday and there was 350 people minimum in the house ready to get punked!
Do you have a message for everyone at home reading this?
To Our Family, Friends, Fans & fellow Disco Astronauts: Thank you for your support and patience during this time. It has been heartbreaking for us to be away from you and that lighted stage for so long now. It might not be next week or next month, but we will be back & we can’t wait to get up in your face with some sweaty, funky disco porn...
