With the current pandemic, the state of the music and touring industry has dramatically changed. Where were you when everything was brought to a halt?
Right as the world came to a halt, we were in the middle of writing some new songs and preparing for Punk Rock Bowling in Calgary, which was originally planned for mid-May. Our drummer Jeff was in Toronto, just about to do a run of drum clinic dates in Ontario.
How has that affected your plans for the coming months? Did you have a tour planned, upcoming album release?
Like many, it meant having to cancel our upcoming shows but also gave us an opportunity to really focus on writing new music. This is something that we have been wanting to do for a while so in a way it gave us the time and space for that. Coming up with creative ways to start writing remotely, sending tracks and ideas to each other has been a new way for us to collaborate.
What have you been doing to fill/make the most of your new-found free time at home?
Musically, I'd say it really gave us a focus and we've got a few new tracks that we plan on releasing soon! And of course, with pretty much everyone at home, we all took in some extra family time as well.
Favourite quarantine meal?
Josh, our singer, is the Head Chef at Fresh Kitchen here in Calgary so I'd have to say anything he's been doing is pure magic.
Favourite Starlite Room Moment?
For me, (Jeff) I would say there are a few Starlite Room moments that really stick out. The first is November 2001, I played a show there that was a highlight in my drumming career. I was in Closure, and we played an incredible night there with Himsa and Compromise. Another was when I teching for Moneen, during a tour lineup with Sparta and Attack in Black, 2007 (I think?) I've always loved the history at the Starlite Room. It's just an energy you feel when you walk in.
Do you have a message for everyone at home reading this?
Well, as they have been saying, "Wash your Hands!" But seriously - be kind and patient with everyone. The music will be coming back!
