With the current pandemic, the state of the music and touring industry has dramatically changed. Where were you when everything was brought to a halt?
We were lucky enough to play some great release shows for our latest EP “Beyond the Nest” in Montreal and Toronto. The shows were at the end of February/start of March before everything was shut down, so we made it just in time. After that we were planning on doing more promotional shows for the EP. Things were looking up!
How has that affected your plans for the coming months? Did you have a tour planned, upcoming album release?
One of the biggest Bird Problems shows to date was initially planned for April, we were set to open for Veil of Maya and Animals as Leaders in Montreal at Corona Theatre (yes, you read that correctly). The show has since been postponed to August...and now the tour has been pushed back to Spring of 2021. We will have to wait and see what happens there, but we are still expecting big things for the future. Another side effect of the pandemic is Michael, our vocalist, moving back to Montreal for the time being. Will be easier to work on some new material when inspiration strikes now that we’re all in the same city!
What have you been doing to fill/make the most of your new-found free time at home?
Joseph has been taking this opportunity to practice as much as possible and stay creative while working on a few different projects. Daniel has been practicing drums, learning how to program drums, and buying a bunch of gear for his drums. Also watching lots of anime. Michael has been developing video games by day, playing video games by night, and writing tender acoustic tunes.
Favourite quarantine meal?
Joseph: egg
Michael: soup
Daniel: chicken stir fry babyyyy
Do you have a message for everyone at home reading this?
Try to be conscious and respectful of your own feelings, and those of the people around you. Everybody is dealing with the pandemic in a different way, and it’s a time for sensitivity, tolerance, and understanding. If you’ve managed to be productive then power to you. If not, don’t put too much pressure on yourself to be super productive or “normal”. Things aren’t normal, and that’s okay – normal wouldn’t exist without times like these. Do what you can to take care of yourself and hang in there. We’ll get through this and be stronger for it.
