With the current pandemic, the state of the music and touring industry has dramatically changed. Where were you when everything was brought to a halt?
We were getting the nitty gritty details sorted out for an EP release/show/tour around Alberta that was scheduled for early May. We were also looking into our backup plan of starting a pepper-shaped-hot-air-balloon-business, but a socially-distanced gondola wouldn't pass regulations (or so we've assumed, have you seen any hot air balloons lately?)
How has that affected your plans for the coming months? Did you have a tour planned, upcoming album release?
The EP release has been the most acutely felt change, as this year we were looking to play as many shows as possible on the heels of that. But things haven't been moving fast enough for heels the past 4 months. Instead, we're tip toeing through some new material and ideas for the band to be ready once we can get back out and start playing shows again.
What have you been doing to fill/make the most of your new-found free time at home?
Ryan (K) has been working on new material for the band, learning some Brazilian guitar, and hunting down every last aphid that even looks at his squash plants with a primordial hunger in their beady eyes. Ryan (D) has been learning mixing and music productions and growing much better peppers that Ryan (K). Gordon has been recording for his project, Sudden Love, streaming video games, and has continued growing enough beard for the whole band.
What was the first thing you did/place you went to now the country is starting to slowly re-open?
Ryan (K) went to Kootenay National Park for some backcountry camping but found the air too thin for hot air balloon travel. Ryan (D) has been clearing out every greenhouse he can find. Gordon hasn't been following the news, he's been watching the skies for the first sign of hot air balloon travel so he can pick up some peppers from his favourite greenhouse.
Favourite Starlite Room Moment?
Probably when we played the Family AF & The Merry Gathering show at Temple last December.
Do you have a message for everyone at home reading this?
Try not to put too much force on yourself. Indulge in what keeps you sane. Recognize what you may have taken for granted, and hold onto all the insights, both within and without, that the past few months may have given you. Hold out for when we can go see live music again or when we can take that hot air balloon ride, we never knew we needed.
