With the current pandemic, the state of the music and touring industry has dramatically changed. Where were you when everything was brought to a halt?
March 14th is my birthday. I had won a night up at Storm Mountain Lodge through a raffle, so I had booked it for my 31st birthday. Dinner and sleeping in a rustic cozy cabin. I'd played a gig for Alberta Music March 7th, and people were talking about COVID-19 but I absolutely could not have predicted that a week later everything would come to an eery and unstable halt. Its a shame, my anxiety about the future really put a damper on my stay at Storm Mountain. I barely remember it, except that when my mom came for dinner - she kept sharing her food and hugging people and wanting to celebrate with me in the way that she knows how. Its so unnatural for her to physically distance from her loved ones, I was struck by how incredibly vulnerable she would be (and is) through this. I felt like I couldn't protect her and like things were beyond my control. Those early days were really stressful.
How has that affected your plans for the coming months? Did you have a tour planned, upcoming album release?
Yes. I just released a new single 2 weeks ago, its one of 3 planned for release this year. My summer tour extended across Western Canada, and for the first time ever, into the US (Seattle, Portland, SF).
What have you been doing to fill/make the most of your new-found free time at home?
I've focused on my writing company, We Are Crickets. I am one half of the songwriting team and we write music for film and advertisements. Some of our most recent clients include THOR Industries (Airstream, Keystone, Jayco), Cabelas and Bass Pro, Sherwood Hockey (Canadian Tire), and RockHouse Motion.
Ive also focused on improving my live performance and my songwriting craft. I take vocal lessons with CQ Voice every 2 weeks, I practice guitar, and I've been writing songs and making demos.
I also adopted a cat called Moggie, who is my best friend.
What was the first thing you did/place you went to now the country is starting to slowly re-open?
Saw my family and had Indian food from Masala's in Banff.
Favourite Starlite Room Moment?
Watching Artist Of The Day: Billie Zizi. She's just such a boss.
Do you have a message for everyone at home reading this?
I'm hard-wired for human connection. Thats why I make music. I miss playing shows so much, but I also appreciate people who are out there making creative things to share with everyone during this pandemic. I think its so important. As an artist, but also as someone who consumes art daily, we have to look after each other. Share the love. Be safe, wash your hands, wear a mask, and take good care.
