With the current pandemic, the state of the music and touring industry has dramatically changed. Where were you when everything was brought to a halt?
I was at home getting a new backing band rehearsed for a tour I was planning to do in mid-spring in support of a new record. That all got axed pretty quick.
How has that affected your plans for the coming months? Did you have a tour planned, upcoming album release?
I spent the previous two years working on my new album, "Half A Day Away". When tour plans got cancelled, I wasn't sure if I should release the album without being able to play shows to support it. I ultimately decided to release it in late May, as was planned, and did a ton of mail orders and door step deliveries. It was different to say the least, but I am happy that I decided to put it out. With no performances, recorded works are that much more important. I did a few live- stream shows from my home studio and was lucky enough to do a Starlite Sessions show to celebrate the release.
What have you been doing to fill/make the most of your new-found free time at home?
I've been really getting in to filming live videos in my studio...setting up a couple of cameras and a few mics and seeing what I can get. I've been writing a lot of new material and have begun recording my next collection of songs as well. Aside from that, I don't think there are many movies that I currently haven't seen. I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel. I got really into Lifetime romance and revenge flicks. They are so bad that they are incredibly entertaining. I highly recommend "Stalked By My Doctor"...it's a future classic.
What was the first thing you did/place you went to now the country is starting to slowly re-open?
I have still been pretty much staying put. Mainly just going to the grocery store and getting take-out. I haven't been to a bar or restaurant yet. It was nice when Long & McQuade finally opened up again. I needed somewhere to get rid of all this pesky money that I've been saving.
Favourite Starlite Room Moment?
There are too many to list...I saw the Slackers there in 2001 I think, when it was still the Rev and I over-indulged in the green stuff before hand. The whole show I was fixated on how I thought the floor kept titlting and moving around. The next time I was there I realized that the floor was actually slanted. Last summer I saw Wille Watson play the Temple stage to about 30 people and it was absolutely mesmerizing. I wouldn't have wanted to see him any other way.
Do you have a message for everyone at home reading this?
Thanks for continuing to support musicians and places like the Starlite Room through this shitty situation. The world needs music and musicians need stages to play on.
