With the current pandemic, the state of the music and touring industry has dramatically changed. Where were you when everything was brought to a halt?
Edmonton, Alberta. I (Arlo) had just come back from two weeks of showcasing in London, England.
How has that affected your plans for the coming months? Did you have a tour planned, upcoming album release?
This spring would have been our fourth consecutive European spring tour. In previous years we had toured Wales, England, Estonia and Holland. We had just secured dates in England, Holland, Italy, Spain and Germany in February. A few weeks after submitting our tour grant they began to close boarders throughout Europe.
What have you been doing to fill/make the most of your new-found free time at home?
Writing and recording during the first few months which allowed me to release four new songs during the pandemic. But as things began to open up I began shooting music videos with my tour manager, Natalie Meyer. The last two months we have filmed and edited three music videos with the help of our mentor Michael B. MacDonald handling the color correction.
On top of that I have really begun to build my online community. I've stayed fairly consistent with proving content and engaging those who follow me which has become so important in the absence of performances.
While shows have not been the same we have managed to perform a few including a couple pop up shows courtesy of John Armstrong and Downtown Live; a pre-recorded Fringe Festival performance; a cul de sac block party and a recent filming for Alberta Spotlight. So Covid has not slowed us down at all.
What was the first thing you did/place you went to now the country is starting to slowly re-open?
As far as first thing I did, I went on a bike ride with my cousin. The first place I went to was Canmore for a hike.
Favourite Starlite Room Moment?
I have two:
1) Watching the Morgan Heritage concert. I'm a huge fan. It was a really magical night.
2) Opening for Shad a few years back. So many things were working in our favour. Great sound. Great light. Great crowd. Another magical night.
Do you have a message for everyone at home reading this?
Let us not take the ability to gather to watch live music for granted ever again.
