With the current pandemic, the state of the music and touring industry has dramatically changed. Where were you when everything was brought to a halt?
I was in Calgary, my wife and I had just returned from our honeymoon in New Zealand, we were feeling very lucky to have gotten one last trip in before the lockdowns started. I was beginning to write new songs for an album and making plans to start recording it. Unfortunately, I was unable to get into a studio to do so due to the lockdown, but it did allow me an opportunity to work on my home recording skills. This actually worked out, alright as I am now primarily working out of my home studio.
How has that affected your plans for the coming year? Did you have a tour planned, upcoming album release?
I had a couple of shows planned in Vancouver and Victoria. It was disappointing to cancel them. One of which was a house concert venue in Vancouver called Loft Garden Oasis, I am still hoping to get back there soon.
What have you been doing to fill/make the most of your new-found free time at home? How are you supporting your mental health through all of this?
My wife and I moved to Victoria in the middle of it all, so I've had lots of time to get outside and explore the hiking trails with my dog. I've also been learning to play slide guitar, through some online lessons, which has been awesome, I've always loved the sound and now I have some time to dedicate to it. I'm thinking that it will start making an appearance on some of my new songs.
How are dealing with the Covid second wave?
Much of the same. Still trying to get out for hikes and walks, I'm grateful that the weather in Victoria has allowed me to do so through the winter months. I've also been doing wood working projects and furniture restoration.
Do you have a message for everyone at home reading this?
Good music is capable of supporting us in hard times. Some of the albums I've been leaning on and enjoying over the last year include, Finch by Penny and Sparrow, The Weatherman by Gregory Alan Isakov and Little Hell by City and Colour (one of my all time favourite albums).
