With the current pandemic, the state of the music and touring industry has dramatically changed. Where were you when everything was brought to a halt?
I had just landed in Saskatoon to attend THE JUNO Awards, when we all found out that they had been cancelled. I had some tour dates booked in Alberta, so I got on the next flight out to Calgary. I was lucky to be home with my parents, as things got scary really quickly. Within four days all of my shows had been cancelled.
How has that affected your plans for the coming year? Did you have a tour planned, upcoming album release?
Yes, I had further tour dates in Ontario and Quebec that were also cancelled, as well as some early plans to head to the U.S. for some dates in the summer. All in support of my recent album "Hope on the Stereo."
What have you been doing to fill/make the most of your new-found free time at home? How are you supporting your mental health through all of this?
The good news is that I have been really creative at home, and in the right part of the release cycle to be writing songs for the next release. I have a home studio where I have been recording demos. At the very beginning I was really active on social media and doing live streams, which really helped me feel connected to my audience, and helped me feel close even though I was stuck at home.
I have a dog that keeps me walking outside every single day, which has been such a blessing to get fresh air and keep on moving, figuratively and literally.
How are dealing with the Covid second wave?
I have created some video series over the past few months on social media, which helps keep me playing and staying connected. This month I am posting a holiday song performance every Wednesday, called "Yuletide Wednesdays." In October I hosted "Thankful Thursdays" with a new video of something to be grateful for every week. I want to do as much as I can to uplift others and stay connected in these strange times.
Favourite Starlite Room Moment?
I hope to have one someday! I have played Edmonton several times and haven't enjoyed that stage yet. :)
Do you have a message for everyone at home reading this?
Keep on "Living on the Bright Side!" Things are looking up and many positive things are coming out of these unprecedented times. If we keep focused on the kind of world we want to live in when this is all over, we will make it through. :)
