With the current pandemic, the state of the music and touring industry has dramatically changed. Where were you when everything was brought to a halt?

I was in New York City, where I have been living the past 8 years, when the pandemic hit.

How has that affected your plans for the coming year? Did you have a tour planned, upcoming album release?

It uprooted my life. I was predominantly a live performer and it felt as if all the momentum I had been building over the years completely fizzled. I was playing across the city, singing for some major artists and was re-defining my own live show until, in a moment, it all ceased to exist.

What have you been doing to fill/make the most of your new-found free time at home? How are you supporting your mental health through all of this?

In my new-found free time at home I have been writing, writing, and writing! Despite the heartache of this time, I am grateful for the opportunity to reflect on what it is that most inspires me and pushes me forward. So much of that is songwriting. In this time, I finished my next record and have subsequently written enough music for another few projects. I have also spent a lot of time doing arts mentorship with youth, which has been a true blessing for my mental health. Throughout the many moments this year where I couldn't find it in my spirit to show up for myself, I am incredibly grateful to have had these young people that I had to show up for. It kept me going. It kept me moving. And it kept me rooted in love.

How are dealing with the Covid second wave?

I think the second wave is hitting us all with a different kind of lethargy. As if the cement around our feet is starting to set and each step feels heavy. That being said, I also think it is being met with the energy of a light at the end of this very long tunnel. With vaccinations rolling out and winter slowly winding down, there's a sense that we will get moving soon. So I feel that energy building which is both exciting and intense. Like we're almost there but there's still a long road ahead.

Do you have a message for everyone at home reading this?

I see you, I hear you and I feel you. This year has reminded me more than ever of the need, the value and the importance of connection. In this time when we perhaps needed each other most, we've been unable to come together. We have been made aware of the inequalities, injustices and shortcomings of the societies we exist in and have then had to navigate these times in both disconnect and isolation. We have had the time to listen, and as we gear up to come together once more, my hope is that we have heard and continue to hear each other. I want to meet the stage once more with a newfound appreciation for that opportunity, I want to greet my community once more with a newfound reverence for what it means to listen. We will be together again and until then, I send you my love!
