With the current pandemic, the state of the music and touring industry has dramatically changed. Where were you when everything was brought to a halt?
I had just wrapped a week of sessions in Nashville, where we were barraged by a tornado, and flew to NYC at the start of March 2020 hoping for a general lack of natural disasters. Made it back to Toronto right before things started going off the rails.
How has that affected your plans for the coming year? Did you have a tour planned, upcoming album release?
As a session musician I had a fully booked calendar with a bunch of really awesome gigs with a bunch of really awesome artists.
In the back of my mind I was always saying to myself "if I only had a couple weeks off I could make a solo album". Wish granted.
Figured my favourite musicians would be in the same boat so I shot out a couple emails and the whole thing kinda snowballed. It's like the jamband avengers. John Morgan Kimock on drums, Andy Hess on bass, Todd Caldwell on keys, Marco Benevento on keys, Robert Walter on keys, and Oz Noy on guitar.
What have you been doing to fill/make the most of your new-found free time at home? How are you supporting your mental health through all of this?
Hmm pandemic projects that aren't music related? I taught myself to like tomatoes. That was pretty big. That answers both questions.
How are dealing with the Covid fifth wave? Have things locked down again in your region? Have you had to cancel gigs, tours, etc.? Are things reopening & restrictions are lifting in your region? Have you booked any new gigs, tours, etc.? What are your plans for 2022?
I have a spinny chair in which I sit, spin, and record guitar parts for the slew of albums I'm grateful to play on.
Favourite Starlite Room Moment?
Eric Alper sent me your way and said I should mention his name at some point in here just so we're all on the same page. (This was the only section that wasn't required so I popped it here... it would be kinda funny if this got published)
Do you have a message for everyone at home reading this?
No mountain is too big. You may think that tomatoes are icky but with enough perseverance you too can learn to not just tolerate them, but to crave them. You'll pop them in your salads. You'll eat them straight up.
Go do that thing you said you'd do if you only had the time. It doesn't matter what it is, just go get it done. Email your heroes and ask them if they'll play on your Allman Brothers' inspired cover of "Sunrise, Sunset" from Fiddler On The Roof.
You might be thinking "that's impossible, we've crunched the numbers and there's no way a southern rock klezmer tune could exist... the science just isn't ready".
Don't just take my word for it. Pull up Stu Weinberg on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube etc. and hear for yourself that you can accomplish anything you put your mind to.
And while you're there check out my new album "Disco Stu Likes Disco Music". Instrumental jamband inspired music that goes everywhere from mellow, introspective ballads to high energy, psychedelic funk jams.
