With the current pandemic, the state of the music and touring industry has dramatically changed. Where were you when everything was brought to a halt?

I was finishing college, I was in my last year at Metalworks Institute for audio engineering. I remember thinking I was just taught how to navigate an industry that had been laid out a certain way for decades and no one knew how it was going to adapt going forward. It’s still strange to think how quickly the entire world had to shift.

How has that affected your plans for the coming year? Did you have a tour planned, upcoming album release?

For this coming year I’ve just had to postpone a few upcoming shows recently, nothing too drastic. I still have a few releases planned, between this project, another band I’m in and a few others I’m producing and mixing for. Some of these releases have already been delayed, but I think the longest lull has passed since we’ve figured out how to operate safely.

What have you been doing to fill/make the most of your new-found free time at home? How are you supporting your mental health through all of this?

Since the beginning I’ve done a lot of songwriting and recording. It was kind of what prompted me to actually release music because I had so much time to cultivate the songs which i didn’t have the chance to do before. I struggle with not having structure and routine so i learned to regulate my day to day activities, gave myself deadlines and goals. I find going for walks and reading really helpful as well to fill the free time, they’re like healthy escapism to me. Granted I’m still working on the mental health support thing, I don’t think there’s a step-by-step guide for unprecedented times.

How are dealing with the Covid fifth wave? Have things locked down again in your region? Have you had to cancel gigs, tours, etc.? Are things reopening & restrictions are lifting in your region? Have you booked any new gigs, tours, etc.? What are your plans for 2022?

I’ve booked a few shows for January and February but they’re all being postponed for a few months because venues are down again in Toronto. Right now I’m promoting my recent EP Matchbox, with the help of Eric Alper, until we’re ready for shows. I feel very fortunate to be able to make and release music in the midst of everything.

Favourite Starlite Room Moment?

I would’ve loved to have been at the My Chemical Romance themed Christmas night. Two of my favourite things.

Do you have a message for everyone at home reading this?

If you’re aspiring towards any creative endeavour I’d like to offer some words of encouragement. Self- expression can feel really scary especially at the very beginning and I think a lot of people are scared to take the first steps, and then there’s the myth of there being too much art in the world already. There will never be too little room for art, including yours. Start whatever you’ve been meaning to start.
